Timber Cruising
An accurate field-based forest inventory is the foundation upon which landowners can make informed decisions with their land. At Black Fox, we have an experienced team of timber cruisers to collect that data for you. The data we collect is used to determine merchantable wood, assess forest health, plan timber harvests, verify stocking compliance, analyze growth, and guide long-term management decisions. Timber Marking
Timber marking is an art. It takes a keen eye to visualize what a stand of timber will look like after selective harvesting. Our marking crew is trained to weigh the effects of cutting each and every tree we ring with blue paint. When making our tree selections we consider species preference, tree health and form, canopy cover, spacing, and harvesting feasibility. Our team is skilled in breaking down a prescription and interpreting it on the ground. The goal is to guide your forest to its maximum health potential in preparation of continued harvesting and profitability for years to come.
Biological Surveys
One of the most complicated aspects of timberland management is to keep a current and accurate record on the location and habits of wildlife on your property. Accurate wildlife and botanical surveys ensure that your project adheres to state and federal environmental regulations in place to protect species biodiversity. Geographic Information
Systems
Black Fox utilizes ArcGIS software to run spatial analysis for our clients. We can build, manipulate, and update GIS databases for various types of management practices. Black Fox's GIS services include map preparation for environmental documents, harvest unit layout, inventory cruise projects, wildlife surveys, and botanical surveys. We provide the service of collecting and editing geospatial data, creating statistical summaries and reports, maintaining metadata documentation, and creating high quality cartographic products for our clients.
Timber Harvest Plans
In order to harvest trees on private or state land, California requires a Timber Harvest Plan prepared by a Registered Professional Forester. A THP is a comprehensive document that details how timber will be harvested, potential environmental impacts, and mitigation measures. We have multiple RPFs on staff to prepare these documents for you. Black Fox works closely with CalFire and other regulatory agencies to ensure that your plan gets approved the first time.
Conversions
California allows up to three acres of forestland to be converted to non-forested use under specific exemption provisions. Navigating the permitting process, regulatory requirements, and documentation can be complex, but our experienced forestry professionals are here to help. Our team provides comprehensive conversion permitting support, including site evaluations, exemption qualification review, mapping, agency coordination, and preparation of all required paperwork to ensure your project remains compliant with state and local regulations. Tree Mortality Programs
Tree mortality is a major issue in California. An estimated 237 million trees have died between 2010 and 2023 in our state, the most severe loss being in the Sierra Nevada. A wide range of factors have played a part in this devastating mortality rate; dry and hot climate, drought, wildfires, insects and disease are all contributors. Black Fox works closely with multiple agencies to mitigate dead trees that threaten our infrastructure. We also help to educate the public on the causes and potential solutions to this widespread fatality.
Fuels Reduction Projects
Black Fox Timber Management Group Inc. provides professional fuel reduction and hazardous fuels management services focused on reducing wildfire risk and improving forest health. Our team has successfully managed more than 4,000 fuel reduction projects throughout Southern California, including the San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles, Kern County, and San Diego areas.
