Forestry Technician Training Program

Along with everything else, Black Fox is also a school! We have created the most successful and only private forestry technician training program on the west coast. This annual CTE training program equips students with the basics of Forestry Management in order to acquire entry level skills for a career as a Forestry Technician I. Our Forestry Technician training program opens the door for the possibility of a successful career path. Entry-level skills with high level of hands-on experience are provided through a comprehensive approach of classroom and field experience. The Forestry Technician course is seven weeks long and is facilitated at Dunsmuir Adult School in collaboration with Black Fox Timber Management Group, Inc. Our students attend class Monday through Friday to create a realistic expectation of what the job will require and also gain the necessary soft skills to be successful in the workforce. At the end of the training, an occupational certification is earned and job placement/employment offers are made from viable forestry partners looking for employees. You can expect to learn skills such as:
Tree species, tree diseases, tree defect and log position
Timber cruise protocol
Form class and basal area factors
Relaskop
Timber marking
Location posters, Forest Service, Topographical, navigate day and night
Demonstration of spacing & disperse sample areas
Detecting potential historical & prehistoric sites
Logging methods
Silviculture and lay out
Protocol for surveying Northern Spotted Owl, use of callers
GPS for unit mapping and calculating area
General understanding of the Timber Harvest Plan Process
General understanding of forestry economics
